The video shows Zola having pure fun with an enrichment opportunity during Spotlight on Gorillas and is not a trained behavior; the music was added afterward. Zola, nine-years old, is one of eight Western lowland gorillas currently living at the Calgary Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan. He loves to play in water and keepers regularly give him the opportunity to do so as part of the enrichment activities they plan and vary on a daily basis.

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after being attacked by a tiger at the Calgary Zoo early Monday morning. Zoo staff says two men broke into the zoo around 1 am and visited the tiger enclosure. After scaling a second fence, the two intruders were close enough to the tiger pen that two year old Vitali was able to snag one of the mens arms. Rick Donkers reports October 9 update: There will be no criminal charges against two men, one of whom was mauled by a Siberian tiger, when they allegedly scaled a fence and entered the Calgary Zoo early Monday morning. However, city police have charged each of the men with trespassing under the Petty Trespass Act. Staff Sgt. Rick Halford of District 3 General Investigative Unit said at a news conference on Friday that the men had been drinking and may have gone to the zoo to meet someone. "They proceeded to the tiger enclosure, where they climbed over the outer perimeter safety fence and approached the exhibit fence," Halford said in a news release.

Raising awareness and encouraging people to help protect our wildlife. Wow, the Calgary Zoo just put in a new penguin exhibit (Penguin Plunge) with four different types (little and big) of cute funny playful penguins (King, Rockhopper, Gentoo, and Humboldt) and it is absolutely fantastic to see up close in person. Doesn't it make you want your own penguin?!? The video here doesn't do the exhibit any justice really, because seeing the penguins so closely in person is an incredible experience! I hear this is a $25 million exhibit. In this video you will see the Rockhopper looking cool before diving into the water, the Gentoo swimming frantically with the fish, and the Humboldt swimming close to the glass trying to get a closer look at the kids watching him swim! Despite being in captivity these little guys look quite happy.

The Calgary Zoo is pleased to advise that between approximately 4:30 am and 7:00 am today three Amur tiger cubs were born to female Katja; father is Baikal. The birth of these tiny cubs, each weighing and estimated 750 grams is potentially great news for this highly-endangered species. The birth is a result of a breeding recommendation for eleven-year old Katja and ten-year old Baikal from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Program (SSP) for Amur tigers of which the Calgary Zoo is a participant. Amur tigers are classified as endangered and at the last census conducted in the wild it was estimated that only about 350 to 400 Amur tigers remain. To put into perspective the truly endangered status of these beautiful animals, these three tiny cubs are representative of almost 1% of the entire wild population.

Onlookers at the Calgary Zoo were shocked when one western lowland gorilla picked up a knife and pointed it at another. Even more troubling than the incident itself however was how 911 handled the emergency call. We apologize and promise this won't happen again. A message from the International Monkey Alliance.

Calgary Zoo announced the loss of a baby elephant named Malti. Below are excerpts from their press release. For more pictures go to: www.calgaryzoo.org It is with great sadness that Calgary Zoo officials advise that this afternoon Malti and her caregivers lost the battle against the devastating elephant herpesvirus that had afflicted the young elephant in the past few days. Several of her keepers were with her at the time of her death. Born on August 9, 2007, Malti brought joy and delight to thousands of zoo visitors over her short life and helped to raise awareness of the endangered status of her species. Her keepers, staff and volunteers at the zoo are stunned by her death; the grief they feel is tangible. For the press release go to: www.calgaryzoo.org
